Review the two website links provided below to gain some insights into the genre of abstract photography and answer the questions listed below. Upload your completed questions to D2L in the abstract dropbox.
Abstract Photo site #1
1. What are the key elements discussed in the website to help you construct abstract photographic images?
2. Why is the comment "I really like it, but what is it" a favorite aspect of abstract photography for the author?
3. Click on anyone of the artist names from the website. This should take you to Flickr ( a huge photo sharing website). Once in flickr conduct a search for "Abstract Photography". Select 10 images that you find inspiring and copy them into PowerPoint. Describe in a sentence or two what you find intriguing or inspiring about each photograph.
Abstract Photo Site #2
1. List the ten steps provided in the web site and discuss what you find to be the most important aspect after reading each step.

Step 2 Explorations
This week we will spend some time in class exploring the genre of abstract photography.
You will need to conduct four days of separate experiments. Aim to complete one set of experiments each day. It does not matter what order you complete the work. If the flatbed scanner is busy pick another area to explore.

Exploration One
You will need to conduct four days of separate experiments. Aim to complete one set of experiments each day. It does not matter what order you complete the work. If the flatbed scanner is busy pick another area to explore.
Exploration One
- Create several abstract images using the flatbed scanner. You may use any medium that will fit on the scanner bed. Experiment with transparent, translucent and opaque materials. Try moving your subject as the scanner performs the scan.
- Create abstract images using found or collected objects and photograph them using artificial lighting equipment found in the studio including moving light with camera phones.
- Create abstract images from found subjects here on the school campus.
- Create abstract images by purposefully not focusing your camera on the subject. Pay special attention to line, shape, forms and textures.
- Upload each day's explorations into a PowerPoint show.
- Label each slide for the exploration conducted.
- Upload the slideshow to D2L.
Step 3 Manipulations
Exploration Manipulations
- Explore manipulating your experiments in Photoshop.
- Select five images from the week of experiments to digitally manipulation
- Remember abstract art does not depict objects in the natural world, but instead uses colour and form in a non-representational ways.
- Try to imbue your experiments with a mood or feeling.
- Provide a before and after comparison of your experiments.
- Create a PowerPoint of your experimental manipulations.
- Provide a brief critique for each of the five manipulations explaining what you did and what you are trying to accomplish.
- Upload your completed manipulations to D2L
Step 4
Final Composition Based on Music
- Select a song/lyric to base your final abstract photograph on.
- While you are listening to your chosen song, think about working with abstract non-representational shapes and colour to create an expressive photographic abstract image.
- Your work must show clear evidence of influence from the musical work.
- No text can be used.
- The final piece should be a blend of layers to create a composite image .
- The final piece should be on a 24"X 9" canvas with a 1/2" border on all sides at 300 dpi.
- Describe the photographic/digital manipulation techniques used in your work and how they support my intended visual message.
- What song/lyric did you use as an inspiration for creating this piece and how have you accomplished it .
- What part of your finished project did you find most successful and why?
- What part of your finished project did you find least successful and why?
- If you had to do this project again, what part would you change or improve on and why?
- Print the finished abstract photograph at 24"X9" with a 1/2" border on all sides @300 dpi.
- Please be sure to include your name on piece.
- Mount the piece on foam core board and hand in for evaluation.
Step 5
What should be handed in for Evaluation
Please be sure all parts of this unit are uploaded to the Abstract Photography Dropbox on D2L including:
- Step 1. Website & Article Review questions and anwers
- Step 1. Powerpoint of Abstract images with critiques
- Step 2. Explorations including samples of each days tasks
- Step 3. 5 digital Manipulations (before and after with brief critique)
- Step 4. Completed piece uploaded as jpeg, printed piece and reflection questions
- You may submit the work as one PowerPoint or upload each step and label it appropriately.
